When you call, you will either get a staff member or voicemail. Do leave a voicemail message - they get counted! You may get a message that directs you to your Representative’s voicemail.

Sample Script:

Good morning / afternoon. My name is [Name]. I’m a resident of [City/Town] , and I’m calling to ask Rep. ______  to vote in favor of the Safe Communities Act if it’s brought to a vote this session.

Public health efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic can’t succeed until the state shows immigrant communities that it cares more about their wellbeing than their immigration status. Ending our involvement in deportations is a critical first step.

If talking to a person: Can I count on Rep. ______’s vote?

If you know they are a supporter, add: I know that Rep. ___ cares about our immigrant communities. It's really important to act now, immigrant communities can't wait for these crucial public safety protections. Immigrants are living in terrible fear of deportation, and are the hardest hit by the pandemic. Massachusetts needs to take action.

Don’t forget to thank them!

Thank you for your good work.

If voicemail: Please feel free to call me at [your number]

Background:

The Safe Communities Act would end the entanglement of police, courts, and county sheriffs in immigration enforcement, and protect basic rights. This involvement makes immigrants fear sharing personal information with anyone, including medical providers and public health workers. See Medical Providers endorsement here. You can also read our factsheets on the bill here.

The Public Safety Committee has recommended the bill for passage this session. Unless formal sessions are extended, the MA legislature has until July 31 to pass this bill. Let's make sure it gets to the full legislature for a vote!
