Raising Up Massachusetts as an Alternative to Trump's America

Join CSfC and Somerville resident Harris Gruman, Co-Chair of the Raise Up Mass coalition, and state political director for the Service Employees International Union.

Come learn how we can make Massachusetts an alternative to right-wing national politics by fighting for an economy that works for all. Harris will talk about income inequality, nationally and in Massachusetts, and the work of the Raise Up Mass coalition. Right now, Raise Up Mass is focusing on 15 dollar minimum wage and Paid Family and Medical Leave ballot initiatives.

Harris says: "Our own dirty secret, that our state is both a bastion of liberal values AND a case study in growing inequality, reveals the depths of the crisis in American liberalism, the crisis, I would argue, that cost Democrats the Congress, and now the Presidency."

Harris Gruman is the Massachusetts Political Director for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Previously, he was Director of Massachusetts Neighbor to Neighbor, and, in the 1990s, health care reform organizer for the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers. Since 2013, he has helped lead the Raise Up Massachusetts coalition. He also developed the innovative SEIU Community Action program in our Gateway Cities, which was essential to Elizabeth Warren winning her seat in the U.S. Senate.

This event is part of Porter Square Books' monthly series “Be The Change, A Community Civic Engagement Program.” This month Porter Square Books is partnering with Cambridge-Somerville for Change to gather friends and neighbors to take concrete steps toward progressive change.
