With power and influence over our schools, health care, courts, prisons, congressional redistricting and the ability to instruct attorneys general to challenge federal orders, governors are vital to the future of the progressive movement.
Virginia is one of only 15 states with a Democrat governor, and in November, voters there will pick between Democrat Ralph Northam and former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie. Because the GOP holds so many governor seats, it has been easy for state legislatures to gerrymander congressional districts that guarantee Republican control of the US House and keep leaders like Paul Ryan in power. Current gerrymandering in VA is estimated to have cost Democrats three House seats. The winner of this year's election will have veto power over Virginia's 2021 redistricting map.
Ralph Northam is an Army Veteran and pediatric neurologist who has previously served as state senator and Lieutenant Governor.
- Northam has a long record of fighting for women's reproductive rights and is endorsed by Planned Parenthood and NARAL VA for many reasons including leading the fight against a mandatory ultrasound bill that passed the Virginia General Assembly and expanding access to free and affordable health care. Northam has also been a vocal supporter of the defending and improving the Affordable Care Act
- Northam has pledged to repeal Virginia's restrictive Voter ID law and will work to make voting easier and more convenient.
- Northam has received many endorsements from groups focusing on issues progressives care about like gun control, LGBT rights, veterans rights, and more.
