2014 Policy Conference - Shared Prosperity Agenda

To see reflections on the sessions, please see our recap here.

Everyone is talking about income inequality.

Earlier this year, Pope Francis decried the growing inequity in the world, "While the earnings of a minority are growing exponentially, so, too, is the gap separating the majority from the prosperity enjoyed by those happy few. This imbalance is the result of ideologies which defend the absolute autonomy of the marketplace and financial speculation.”

The President said that it was “the defining challenge of our time:  Making sure our economy works for every working American.”

Every candidate for statewide office is talking about income inequality.

At Progressive Mass, we want to DO something about it.  And that's why we have developed the Shared Prosperity Agenda.  And why we are focusing our Policy Conference this year on the issue.

The conference will feature leading experts, practitioners, advocates and legislators.   Speakers will be encouraged to share a broad perspective on each subject as well as suggest critical progressive solutions.   The day will be divided into four sections:

Welcome and Overview – Congressman Jim McGovern will open the session

Policy Panels – leading policy experts and practitioners will address

  • Jobs and Wages – How can we move to a living wage economy?  How can we most effectively grow the pie equitably while alleviating poverty as we know it?

Marjorie Kelly, Author, Owning the Future, Nautilus Book Award Winner

Elyse Cherry, Chief Executive Officer of Boston Community Capital

  • Higher Education – How can we offer a free, publicly funded quality post secondary education to all our residents?

Elizabeth Baylor, Associate Director, Postsecondary Education, Center for American Progress

  • Health Care – How do we move, as a State, to a single payer system and what role does a public option play?

Richard Kirsch, Roosevelt Institute and Former Head of HCAN

  • Affordable Housing – How do we ensure universal access to housing that costs no more than a third of one’s annual income

Dr. Eric Belsky, Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard

Chrystal Kornegay, President and Chief Executive Officer, Urban Edge

Implementing in Massachusetts – legislators and advocates talk about the progress, challenges, land mines associated with each getting progressive change done on Beacon Hill

Scheduled to Appear - Senators Dan Wolf and Jamie Eldridge, Representatives Jason Lewis and Tom Sannicandro

Activist Organizations - Phenom, MassCare, RaiseUp, Homes for Families

In addition, substantial time has been set aside throughout the day for activists to meet each other, network, strategize and just enjoy each others' company.

Looking forward to coming, bringing Sally from the Worcester Unemployment Action Group. And questions about how to build and coordinate grass roots action groups across the state around economic survival issues for regular people. Including our own.
