A Big Win for Democracy in Massachusetts

Tuesday night was a big win for democracy in Massachusetts.

Voters resoundingly voted to bring greater transparency to state government and to ensure that no eligible voter is turned away. We have been an outlier in the country in exempting the Governor and the Legislature from the public records law and an outlier in New England in having an arbitrary and exclusionary voter registration cutoff. No longer.

Voters resoundingly voted against allowing private equity billionaires to rewrite our election laws in their favor. Despite Question 3’s millions of dollars in private equity money, they have lost in almost every single city and town in the Commonwealth. Voters across the ideological spectrum said hell no to billionaires being able to make democracy in Massachusetts into their plaything.

Voters overwhelmingly rejected a dark money effort to repeal our cannabis laws as well as a fear-mongering, dishonest campaign to roll back our progress on gun safety.

And voters made clear yet again that they understand that our prosperity as a state comes from our investments in education, infrastructure, and health care by defeating an effort by corporate lobby groups to hijack the state budget. And that they understand that every worker deserves a union.

Around the country, we are seeing the same theme: standing up for democracy, against corruption and dark money, and for community safety and shared prosperity over fear-mongering and division.
